Sofia location map

 With a current population of more than 1 200 000 people, Sofia holds a significantly central position in the Balkans- because of its location and as the newest European Union capital. It is located in the western Bulgarian region, in the largest valley in the country- Sofia Valley, at the north foot of Vitosha Mountain, and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. It sprawls on a territory of 1 186 square kilometers and is the passing point of three mountain passes which have been of importance since antiquity because they connect the Adriatic Sea and Central Europe with the Black and Aegean Seas.
 The city of Sofia is positioned some 130 kilometers from Plovdiv and 340 km. west of Bourgas and 380 km. west of Varna. The capital is also advantageously set 55 km. from the Serbian border, 113 km. from the Macedonian frontier and 183 km. from the Greek border.
